Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me.  In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.  I am the way and the truth and the life.

Let us remember these deceased loved ones in prayer, as well as those who mourn their passing.  Mass is offered Monday to Friday at Fenwick at 7:30 AM.

If you are aware of any member of the extended Fenwick community who should be included here, please email Linda Manering.

                NancySjostrom

    GRANDMOTHER OF ALUMNI
                Andrew Sjostrom ‘93
                Nicholas Sjostrom ‘97

Edna Dedolph Sjostrom, 94, of Oak Park, diedon Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Bethesda Home and Retirement Center. She hadsuffered for the past several years from cardiac and respiratory conditions butshe retained her sense of humor and her interest in her children andgrandchildren to her last days.

"Grandma's ability to bring humor toany situation keeps us laughing," said her granddaughter, Emily Sjostrom."Even in difficult times she brought a smile to our faces. And in her lastfew days, her wit never failed her. This is what keeps us smiling in thesaddest of moments in her passing."

Born on Feb. 10, 1918 in Mayville, Wis., shewas the fourth and youngest child of George and Martha Dedolph. Her father, aveterinarian, taught her to drive on rural roads at the age of 12, and sheenjoyed accompanying him on calls to the area's many dairy farms. She attendedsecretarial school after high school and worked during the pre-World War IIyears in federal government jobs in the Milwaukee area.

When World War II broke out, she was hiredas secretary to the post commander of Ft. McCoy, then called Camp McCoy, a U.S.Army training and deployment center near Sparta, Wis. There, Edna met andmarried Robert Sjostrom, a civil engineer and a newly commissioned 2ndLieutenant in the U.S. Army. After the war, the Sjostroms made their home inthe Morgan Park and Beverly areas of Chicago before moving to Oak Park. Herethey were involved in the lives of their children, grandchildren, andgreat-grandchildren.

"Grandma loves to tell stories. I havewonderful memories of her putting me to bed as a child and rubbing my back andtelling me stories," said Sarah Sjostrom. "She was an incrediblydedicated and devoted grandma."

Throughout her life, she loved to welcomefriends, especially her children's friends, to her home and to her dinnertable. And her spirit of adventure enlivened her role as an otherwise typicalwife and homemaker. In 1959, Edna and her husband moved themselves and theirsix children, age 16 to 2, to Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, for two years, to takeadvantage of a job opportunity.

From the late 1960s through the mid-1980s,she rode thousands of miles on the passenger seat of a BMW motorcycle driven byher husband. In 1975, they picked-up a new BMW in Germany and rode throughEurope, and later, back home, as far west as Yellowstone National Park, and asfar east as St. Johns, Newfoundland. They were founding members of the300-member Chicago Region BMW Motorcycle Association in 1969, and the role ofwomen in the club was a subject of some debate in those days.

"Edna Sjostrom's input was byexample," said longtime club member Alice Hanes. "Bob and Edna made apresentation at a club meeting on their trip to Europe," she continued and"they made me feel that, by golly, there are couples here, doing thistogether and sharing with the club."

Edna Sjostrom is survived by her children,Joseph (Jane), Jerry (Nancy), Dan (Colleen), Martha Ott (David), and William(Laurie); her grandchildren, Sarah, Andy (Kate), Nick, Anne (Jeremy), Emily,Galen, Bridget, Gregory, Anja, and Alex; and two great-granddaughters, Beatriceand Maria Isabela. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and her son,Robert.

Family visitationwill be held at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday,March 31, at Drechsler Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St.,Oak Park.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations toShriners Hospitals for Children, 2211 N. Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60707, inmemory of Mrs. Sjostrom's late son, Robert Sjostrom, who was a volunteer there.

    Fromthe McMahon family:

FranklinMcMahon of Lake Forest, an internationally recognized artist reporter, died atthe age of 90 as a result of a stroke on March 3nd. His son Michael McMahonconfirmed his death.

McMahon’sdrawings and paintings, a number of which were drawn on assignment for theChicago Tribune, the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Sun Times, the New YorkTimes, Life and Look Magazines, and Sports Illustrated, captured the majorhistorical events of the post-World War II era.

His artworks included the trial of Emmet Till, thepolitical campaigns and conventions between 1960 and 2004, the Vatican IICouncil, the 1965 March on Selma, the Conspiracy Trial of The Chicago 8, thefirst walk on the moon drawn from Mission Control and the Watergate hearings.McMahon made all of his drawings “on scene” because he believed that an artistreporter could “see around the corners” to capture the essence of the emotionof the subjects of his work. As the culture reporter of the Sunday Telegraph ofLondon Peter Lyle noted: “…his pencil and his pad have been witness to many ofthe most significant events in postwar American and world history.”

Accordingto close family friend and Art Institute Curator Gloria Groom “The talented artist-reporterMcMahon is an internationally recognized Chicago original. His on-site sketchesand artworks of many local, national and world events captured the energy andemotion of the given moment.”

McMahonreceived the Renaissance Prize of the Art Institute of Chicago as well as threeEmmy Awards and one Peabody award for films incorporating his artwork. Hereceived honorary degrees from Loyola University of Chicago and Lake ForestCollege. His work is in a variety of public collections including the Libraryof Congress, the Smithsonian Institution and the Chicago History Museum, whichhas collected his drawings and paintings of the Emmett Till Trial and theChicago 8 Conspiracy Trial. McMahon was a member of the Guiding Faculty of theFamous Artists School in Wilton, Connecticut.

McMahon, the father of nine children, a number of whom followed in his artisticfootsteps, was born on the west side of Chicago in 1921 and grew up in Oak Parkand Los Angeles before returning to Chicago to attend high school. He is a 1939graduate and member of the Hall of Fame of Fenwick High School where hisprofessional artistic career started when one of his drawings for his highschool publication was published in Collier’s Magazine.

McMahonenlisted in the Army Air Force upon his graduation from high school and servedas a B-17 navigator conducting missions over Germany. His plane was shot downand he spent months as a German prisoner of war and made secret drawings of hisNazi captors, which were later published.

Afterthe war he returned to Chicago and married his high school sweetheart, the latetravel reporter Irene Leahy McMahon who preceded him in death in 1997. TheMcMahons were married for fifty-one years and resided in Lake Forest, Illinois. For the last twenty years of their lives together they worked as a teamtraveling the world. Franklin McMahon made drawings of the venues around theworld that Irene McMahon documented as a travel reporter for the Pioneer Pressand numerous other Chicago and national publications.

McMahon’sson, noted photographer Wm. Franklin McMahon, observed that: “Dad was not onlyan amazing artist but a loving husband and father who managed to raise a familyof nine children while ‘chasing the story’ as an artist reporter wherever themajor events of the day were happening. While his coverage of historical eventsresulted in public acclaim it was his work in creating a ‘World Studio’ ofdrawings and paintings while traveling the world with my mother in the lasttwenty years of their lives together that brought him his greatest joy.”
