Welcome to Fenwick High School Home of the Friars What’s a friar? In a word, a friar is about excellence.A friar is spiritually excellent, committed to a life of virtue and service, as evidenced in the thousands of community service hours performed by students, excellent retreats, such as Kairos, carried out by our campus ministry office, and the lived example of faith by the Fenwick community. Moreover students are able to connect with other Dominican schools all over the country in the High School Dominican Preaching Conference. Our spiritual commitment is tangibly seen in the more than 80 years of ministry and service of the Dominican friars of the Province of Saint Albert the Great. A friar is academically excellent, a scholar seeking to ever expand knowledge and understanding. Last year our graduating class received over $23 million in merit based college financial aid. For the seventh year in a row, the average ACT scores of our senior class placed Fenwick High School in the top 100 high schools in the United States who report ACT scores. The school continues to have numerous AP scholars of varying levels of excellence. Our students travel to places such as Costa Rica and Peru to study the rain forest first hand, by creating experiments and communicating the results of their projects to a variety of audiences. Our JETS team is defending state champs (again - and the overall best score of all schools in Illinois), and our scholastic bowl and WYSE continue to excel. Our faculty continue to learn, bringing new and dynamic methods to classroom instruction. A friar is athletically excellent. Sports Illustrated recently named Fenwick High School the best high school program in the state of Illinois. Our varsity girls basketball coach was named Coach of the Year by EA Sports, and won his 800th game. Our football team won the Prep Bowl. Our numerous varsity and club sports give ample opportunity for excellence. Our girls water polo team, boys' water polo team and JETS team won state championships. A friar is an artist, finding beauty in an ever growing music and art program, and a drama program that engages a large percentage of students each year. Whether it is in art projects in a variety of mediums, in the performance of a classic Shakespeare play, a Broadway musical or in our long running talent show Banua, the artistic talents of our students amaze. Our bands, orchestra and choruses win awards and challenge our students each year. A friar is a disciple, always seeking to be better tomorrow than today. With new construction to build more classrooms, science labs, a fine arts room, and new entry way, Fenwick continues to excel. We have been able to expand our music and arts program, and more and more opportunities continue to be provided for our students. Put simply, a friar is an excellent person. With successful alumni, supportive parents (Mothers' Club, Fathers' Club), a dedicated faculty and exceptional students, Fenwick High School is a friendly community. As you explore our website, come to see why every day is a great day to be a friar! Fr. DePorres Durham, O.P. President |
